History of Grace
On July 18th of 1958 at Bethesda Baptist Church which was located at 388 So. Orleans St. , Grace Baptist Church was organized. R. W. McClendon was elected Pastor.
In 1959 Rev. Coleman Crawford Jr. joined when Grace was convening in the Veteran's Benefit Bldg. They soon after moved to 1925 Riles St
In 1960 Rev. E. C. Tippet the Assistant Pastor was called to another church, so on April 25th 1961 Rev. Crawford was elected as Assistant Pastor.
In October of 1961 Rev. McClendon was called to Woodlawn Baptist Church in Brownsville, Tn.
In January of 1962 Rev. Crawford officially assumed the pastorate of Grace.
On April 7th of 1965 Grace moved to1231 N. Manassas St.
In 1973 the building next door at 1227 N. Manassas St was purchased.
In 1976 Mortgages on both buildings were paid in full.
In 1978 the first deacons crowned by Rev. Crawford were Bros. Charles Thigpen, Carl Jefferson, and Odell Washington.
In 1979 we saw the demolition of the 1227 building and the groundbreaking ceremony of the new sanctuary on August 12.
In 1980 the old sanctuary was dedicated and named "Frank Betts Fellowship Hall" in honor of an organizing deacon.
In 1990 on Sept. 30th the church celebrated its' 32nd Anniversary and burned the mortgage on the new sanctuary.
In 1998 plans were presented for a new sanctuary and family life center.
On Nov. 16th of 1998 First Lady Sis. Roberta Crawford was called home to the Lord.
In 1999 history was made when on March 28th Dr. Inetta F. Rogers became the first female minister of Grace.
On May 6th 2003 a portion of Firestone was named for Rev. Coleman Crawford Jr. and groundbreaking for our new facility was held on May 11th.
In 2004 Rev. Crawford was elected president of the Memphis Baptist Ministerial Association. We also had a ribbon-cutting and moved into our new sanctuary. The Cornerstone was laid.
In 2008 we celebrated our 50th Anniversary. Three Jubilarians were honored. They were Oscar and Mary Jackson and Evangelist Nettie B. Rogers. Rev. R.W. McClendon preached the historic sermon.
In 2014 Rev. Crawford sought out Rev. Ronnie C. King to become his successor as Senior Pastor upon his retirement. After two years Rev. King became the Co- Pastor and following Pastor Crawford's demise he was elected Pastor of Grace. He was officially installed as Pastor of Grace M B Church on Oct. 27th of 2017.
